As well as production music, I also write, produce and release music for children under the name Refractive Music Kids.
I've always felt that children's music deserves the same care and attention as any other kind of music. It shouldn't be an afterthought or suffer from lesser production. I want the songs to have good melodies, interesting arrangements, real instruments and proper production, music that children can enjoy, and that their parents parents can enjoy too.
The songs have been finding their way out into the world too, including radio play in NZ and around the world and inclusion on NZ On Air's NewTracks Kids compilations.
My background as a guitar teacher is actually where the children's songs began. I started writing simple original songs specifically for my younger students to learn and play. I wanted songs that were genuinely easy for beginners, but that still sounded and felt like real music. You'll hear bits of folk-rock, surf guitar, pop, rock and other things I've picked up over a lifetime of playing and recording music.
I now offer a guitar starter kit for young beginners, giving parents and teachers the resources they need to help children start playing guitar.
Check out the Refractive Music Kids part of my website. And take a listen to sme of the songs.
